Milwaukee SDS-Plus & SDS-MAX Hammer Drill Bits. ... Many of the demolition tools and large breakers will use the Hex shank but that is another topic for another day.
The shank is the end of a drill bit grasped by the chuck of a drill. The cutting edges of the drill bit contact the workpiece, and are connected via the shaft with the shank, which fits into the chuck.
Compared to the SDS or SDS Plus, the SDS Max has three open grooves and a locking segment instead of balls. SDS Max also has an 18mm. shank which is inserted 90mm. into the chuck when used. Since the drill bits of SDS Max are bigger, they are considered more expensive compared to SDS and SDS Plus drill bits.
SDS Plus is an improvement on the original SDS system, but remains compatible with SDS bits, and is now the most commonly seen on the market. SDS Max is designed for the heaviest masonry work, and is incompatible with SDS/SDS+ bits.
